Tomorrow, I will journey to San Antonio, Texas, for the Annual International Breast Cancer Conference, SABCS. The highlight of the event for me is the 'Advocate Lounge,' which I consider my "safe space." This lounge will allow me to connect with the most extraordinary patient advocates dedicated to advancing research to eliminate this disease. I view these women and men as my tribe, which, to me, means family. We are united by an experience we were hijacked into—the experience of breast cancer. For me, this conference is like a pilgrimage, where I have a chance to bond with new and old friends, and sadly mourn friends lost over the past year. Â
Building connections with those who have experienced similar situations provides immense comfort and inspiration. By sharing stories, offering advice, and recognizing that you're not alone in your challenges, your spirit can be lifted in indescribable ways. This community becomes like an extended family, providing support during difficult times and celebrating even the smallest victories. You'll leave the conference with new friends you can reach out to whenever you need to talk.
The days will be exhausting and often seem overwhelming. It's crucial to be kind to yourself and accept that you can't accomplish everything. I need to continually remind myself that my goal is to learn as much as possible, and not "beat myself up" if I don't understand or get to everything.
The unique opportunity to engage directly with researchers (#GRASPCANCER) is truly invaluable. For some researchers, it will be their first encounter with a patient, allowing them to see firsthand the clinical impact of their work. Our role as advocates is to ensure they consider the patient's quality of life when designing treatments.
If you're attending for the first time, I can't wait to meet you! Prepare for an amazing week that justifies the time you've sacrificed from the busy holiday season. Feel free to buddy up with an experienced advocate or ask for guidance. We love supporting each other and want everyone to get as much as they can from the experience. So pack your most comfortable shoes, some healthy snacks, and get plenty of rest before you leave.
I hope you'll return with a refreshed sense of peace, hope, and recharged batteries, realizing that so many talented and committed scientists are working diligently to find a cure for our disease. I pray that my five precious grandchildren will see a world free of breast cancer. Will you please pray with me?
